About Bali
Bali is an Indonesian island of about 4.3 million people between Java and Lombok, eight degrees south of the equator. Unlike the rest of mostly Muslim Indonesia, its culture is shaped by Balinese Hinduism: you will see family temples in every compound, daily palm-leaf offerings on doorsteps and ceremonies that close village roads. A chain of volcanoes runs across the island, topped by Mount Agung at 3,142 metres, and their fertile slopes are carved into rice terraces watered by subak, a cooperative irrigation system recognised by UNESCO.
Travellers usually combine the cultural, green hills around Ubud with a beach base in the south: stylish Seminyak, surf-town Canggu, the clifftop resorts of Uluwatu or the calm lagoons of Nusa Dua and Sanur. Further afield are the islands of Nusa Penida and Lembongan, dive villages such as Amed and Tulamben, and the quiet north around Lovina and Munduk. The dry season from April to October is the most popular time to visit, and I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) near Kuta handles almost all flights.
